Global Intern Spotlight: Bruno Sola – Brazil

We continue with our Global Intern Spotlight series with Leo Burnett Tailor Made Intern Bruno Sola. Bruno always wanted to be a bartender, but since there wasn’t a college course available in Brazil, he studied gastronomy. After graduating, he worked at various restaurants and went on a sabbatical in Germany, but he realized he missed having closer contact with people and putting his way of thinking and seeing the world on paper. That’s how he became smitten with advertising.


Hello, Bruno! For those not familiar with your department, can you tell us your official job title and describe what you do in three words?
I’m a planning intern. In three words? Reading, speaking and research.

At what point and why did you decide to work in advertising?
I’ve always liked to write and talk. No matter how much I created in the restaurant, I needed greater contact with people. A friend of mine who had recently graduated told me about his advertising course, the routine of an ad agency and the people he got to know. I wanted to have this same experience, too, and see my thoughts and words take shape. I soon enrolled in an advertising course and here I am today.

How did you join Leo Burnett Tailor Made?
A friend posted a want ad for the internship on Facebook. After reading it, I instantly knew it was for me. I immediately sent everything I could by email and even asked if they needed anything else. Then came interviews and more talks, until I finally was offered the internship.

Where did you attend school?
I studied in gastronomy at Senac, in São Paulo, where I lived and breathed cooking from Monday to Saturday. After graduating from there, I’m now studying advertising at Anhembi Morumbi University.

Has studying cooking helped you in advertising? What do you think this course has given you in terms of personal growth?
It’s helped me a lot. Gastronomy has taught me the importance of mise en place (pre-preparation, setting up and having everything ready for preparing a dish) and all the methodology behind a restaurant. At the same time, I brought into my life the “feeling” shaped in the kitchen by all the different ingredients and flavors – the possibilities are endless!

What part of your work in advertising do you enjoy most?
Being able to talk about the most diverse topics and in the most different ways. Knowing that what I like in the way of music, sports, movies, hobbies, cartoons or even the kitchen. I can use all of this, in one form or another, in my work in favor of my client.

What is your typical day at work like?
A lot of research, lots of reading, many different subjects and lots of coffee. A lot of talking with the account team and just about everyone in the agency, to assert the concepts we create and the data we collect. Also, going over the presentations many times to iron out any glitches before presenting to the client.

What’s your favorite place at Leo Burnett Tailor Made, besides your workplace? And why?
On the roof, at the tables we have up there. It's nice to go there late in the afternoon, have a cup of coffee and watch the planes fly by. It helps you relax and plan your next vacation!

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Does your passion for cooking prevail?
Cooking is what I enjoy doing the most and will always be. But five years ago I started running, and I must confess – I’ve been spending more time training for the marathon than in the kitchen in my spare time.

Do you have a favorite movie?
It’s called “Flash of Genius” and tells the true story of an inventor and his struggle in the courts to receive recognition for his invention. Acting as his own lawyer, he gives a lesson in the possibilities of creating something new, even when using the same tools that everyone else has always had at their disposal. I always watch this scene at least once a week!

And what dish do you most like to prepare?
Risotto, for sure! All types, with all the different types of rice (carnaroli, bomba), always accompanied with a juicy steak or fish. I also like to try my hand at making ice cream – I even have my own recipe for coconut ice cream with lemon and pepper.

What advice would you give those aspiring to be interns?
In advertising, and even more so regarding Leo: mention everything you love to do, because that's what makes you unique and what will make your work unique, too. It doesn’t matter what your hobbies and passions are, you will use them (or part of them) in your work, and love what you do even more!
