Battling for Table Tennis King at the 2012 Paddle Royale

Technology, networking, prizes, drinks, hors d'oeuvres, slamming, betting, swearing: The 2012 Paddle Royale seemed to have more of everything this year, but on Friday, September 7 at the Sofitel Chicago, there was only one who ultimately stood out from more than 100 competitors.

For the 200-plus attendees, it might have seemed arduous as the challengers made their way to the semis. More serious players with more closely matched skills made the games extra competitive and betting on winners difficult.

The road to the end wasn’t without controversy, as a questionable point was called back after an instant video replay. The call would have put our very own Mario "the Lobmaster" Tejada just one point away from deuce — and a certain slot in the semis. And in the end, the high velocity spin from a Draftfcb newcomer proved to be untouchable, solidifying a 2-0 win over two-time runner-up Bernie "the Mexicutioner" Gomez from Euro RSCG.

The Creative Technology group from Leo Burnett and Arc presented another awesome spectacle of design and technology that was used to manage the 200-plus matches, 15 companies, 327 bets, and 5 hours of double elimination table tennis war that finally ended with "Pradeep 'PK'" Kumar from DraftFCB as the new reigning King, and $5,000 of additional support for Chicago's Off the Street Club.
