Leo Q+A: Charley Wickman

Of Firestone fame, fresh from the Allstate game...this edition of Leo Q+A features none other than Charley Wickman. Peruse below for some tidbits from the veteran CD on eternity, Bill Murray and where he does his best thinking, all straight from the (Wick) man himself.

Name: Charley Wickman
Title: EVP, Executive Creative Director

Describe your role in one word: endlessquesttomakeworkbetter

If you weren’t in advertising, what would you be doing? Writing my novel. Cliché, I know...

What’s on your to-do list this year? Same as last year. Win at Cannes.

What's the first thing you do in the morning when you arrive? Tap the space bar.

Where do you do your best thinking? Either commuting in my car or just before falling to sleep.

Do you have a personal motto? "Better work" is the answer to every question in advertising.

What creative talent would you most like to have? Focus. But I don't think technically that's a creative talent.

If you could be a character in any commercial, who would it be? I'd be an E-Trade baby so I could live another 100 years.

What’s your greatest advertising-related fear? Flying.

What’s your current state of mind about the advertising industry? Cautiously optimistic.

What living creative person do you most admire? Easy. Bill Murray. He's been brilliant for almost 40 years.

How would you like to end your career? In the words of Keith Richards, "I'd like to walk before they make me run."

What do you consider your greatest creative achievement? TBD

What’s your idea of advertising misery? Making GPC (Leo Burnett's quarterly Global Product Committee, which rates work from around the world on a ten-point scale) 5 point something work. Takes the same time and effort as great work.

What’s your idea of perfect advertising happiness? Just knowing we did something great. I don't need the outside validation. You just know...

What advertising lingo do you most overuse? "I don't disagree." Then how about you just agree? Less negativity. Less words.

What’s your biggest advertising regret? If you like where you are, you can't complain about the past.

What trait do you value most of co-workers? Talsire. (talent meeting desire)

What do you think most people misunderstand about the business? How hard it is. The TV show view of advertising is horribly misleading.

What’s the quality you most like in a creative director? Talsire.

What’s the quality you most like in an account executive? Talsire.

And, finally, what’s your favorite ad/campaign of all time? Milk. So good it still makes me mad.
